What You Need to Know About Orthodontics

It’s important to understand the orthodontic process before getting braces.

Your Canton family dentists Drs. Rhonda and Andrea Company have already deemed you an ideal candidate for braces. The orthodontic treatmentimpressions of your teeth have already been made and you are ready to come back in to get your braces. Of course, once the braces are placed you may feel a bit nervous about the whole process. Whether your child is getting braces or you’ve decided it’s time you had a straighter smile, here are some things to think about with regards to your braces.

Caring for Your Smile

If you are getting traditional bracket-and-wire braces, you may not have the first clue how to brush and floss your teeth. That’s okay! That’s where your Canton dentist comes in. Before you even get braces, we will talk to you about the best way to make sure you keep a clean and cavity-free smile while wearing braces. Yes, your oral care regime will need to change a bit to accommodate your orthodontics, but it’s really not that much of a challenge. Of course, if you are a teen or adult who is getting removable clear orthodontic aligners then your regime won’t have to change a bit.

If possible, try to schedule your dental cleaning before you get your braces so that your smile is plaque-free before your braces are applied.

Types of Braces

Before you even get started it’s important that you know the different kinds of braces that are available and how they all work. With all the advancements in orthodontic technology we can offer our patients many different options when it comes to braces, from traditional metal braces to nearly invisible aligners for adults and teens.

We will help you decide which types of braces will be able to tackle your dental issues the best.

After Getting Braces

You may experience some minor discomfort or soreness after getting traditional braces. Just know that this is completely normal. New braces can often take some getting used to. This means eating a softer diet for a couple days after your braces have been placed. You can even take an OTC pain reliever to help ease discomfort. This sensitivity should disappear after a couple days.

During the course of your orthodontic treatment, you’ll also need to come into our Canton dental office every four to six weeks to make sure everything is going smoothly. Whether it’s time to schedule your orthodontic consultation or you need to schedule your orthodontic check-up call Rhonda F. Company DDS, Andrea M. Company DDS & Associates today.
