The Importance of Children and Infant Dental Care

As a parent, you would probably list your children’s health as a top priority. However, a large part of keeping your child’s general health top-notch is keeping their dental health top-notch as well. Find out the importance of child and infant dental care with help from your Children's Dental CareCanton, OH family dentists.

When should my child start seeing the dentist?
Generally, children should see the dentist for the first time before their first birthday, within six months of their first tooth erupting. Starting dental visits early provides preventative care for future issues and allows your child to become comfortable with visiting the dentist. Prepare your child by talking with them about their dental visit and building excitement for the appointment. Children who are very fussy or will not cooperate may need to reschedule their appointment.

How should I care for my child’s teeth?
Parents should wipe infants’ gums with a soft, damp cloth after eating and before bedtime. When the teeth begin to erupt, brush them with a soft toothbrush and a tiny amount of toothpaste. Avoid giving your child anything other than water just before a nap or bedtime as this could cause tooth decay. Children should brush at least twice a day. When teeth begin to erupt and grow close enough together, teach your child to floss daily.

Child and Infant Dentistry in Canton, OH
Your child’s first dental visit will be mostly informational with little or no treatment. The first visit is usually reserved for getting the child comfortable with the dentist’s office and their dentist. The visit usually lasts less than 30 minutes and involves a physical examination of the teeth, gums, bite and oral tissues. If necessary, a cleaning to remove any plaque or tartar buildup and x-rays also take place. Your dentist will show you the proper way to care for your child’s teeth and answer any questions you may have.
